Falling Away

Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;
What does it mean to fall away? If you are someone that believes in the idea of eternal security, either this falling away has nothing to do with the Church or it has nothing to do with salvation. What is it then? I’ve never heard or read anything that gives a good answer to this question when the person has a bias towards eternal security. This is because they are not letting God be true, but every man a liar (Rom. 3:4).
This has everything to do with the Church and is definitely about salvation. What else would it be? Is there anything in the Bible that you would be falling away from other than salvation? I’m told to work out my salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12). What would I be fearing, if not the loss of my salvation?
They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.
Those that have received the word with joy and BELIEVED, then fall away. The people described here did believe, but then they fell away from their belief, aka lost their salvation. Belief is linked to salvation (Rom. 10:9). It gets worse though.
4 For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.
If they fall away, they cannot be renewed again unto repentance. The weight of this truth should be heavy. Why is this not talked about in many churches? If you are a “once save, always saved” believer, then this falling away cannot be about salvation. What else would it be about though? According to Hebrews 3:14, we must hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end. If you don’t hold it to the end, you have fallen away and these verses would pertain to you. This should be sobering, but simple.
We must start teaching Christians that maintaining their faith is a very serious thing. If you fall away, the Bible tells us that your end is worse than it would have been if you never believed (2 Pet. 2:20). Don’t let doctrines of devils, like eternal security, hide Biblical truth from you. Study the Bible, with the guidance of the Holy Ghost, and don’t let man deceive you into a false sense of security.
